Royal Mail, wired into the order desk.

Tracking numbers that fill themselves in, Royal Mail's updates passed on in your name, and orders that move to shipped and delivered on their own.

Shipping explainer

Read the transcript

We run a research peptide store ourselves, and every parcel used to mean copying a tracking number by hand, then answering "where is my order?" all week. So we wired Royal Mail into the order desk.

Buy the label on Royal Mail's website, and the postage confirmation comes to your store. The tracking number fills itself in on the right order, matched by name and postcode. Tick Dispatched, and the customer gets an email in your store's name, with the number and the day it goes to Royal Mail.

From there, Royal Mail's own emails come to your store, not your customer. On its way, due today, delivered: each one is passed on in your name, once, and the order moves to shipped and delivered by itself.

And if nobody marked a parcel shipped, the store checks the tracker at seven each evening, and marks shipped every parcel Royal Mail has scanned.

To set it up, put your store's parcels address on your labels, forward your Royal Mail confirmations to it, and add a tracker key.

Royal Mail today, with more carriers and regions on the way. Start your store at my-pepts.com.

How it works

  1. Step 1: Royal Mail on every order

Royal Mail is your store's carrier, so the Dispatched step has a box for the tracking number and every number links to Royal Mail's tracking page. One store, one carrier: you never pick a courier per parcel.

  2. Step 2: The label fills in the number

Buy the label on Royal Mail's website and its postage confirmation comes to your store. Each parcel's number goes onto the paid order with the same postcode and name, and only when exactly one order fits. Anything it cannot place waits in your inbox, and nothing is sent until you tick Dispatched.

  3. Step 3: Dispatched tells the customer

Tick Dispatched and the customer gets an email in your store's name: packed, labeled, the tracking number and when it goes to Royal Mail, today, tomorrow or on Monday, read off your store's clock. The button opens the parcel on Royal Mail's website.

  4. Step 4: Royal Mail's emails, in your name

Royal Mail writes to your store about each parcel instead of to your customer. On its way, due today and a confirmed delivery request are passed on in your words, delivered moves the order to delivered, and the first email about a paid order marks it shipped. Only emails Royal Mail has signed are acted on.

  5. Step 5: The evening check

At seven each evening the store asks the tracker about every order you ticked Dispatched but never marked shipped. Any parcel Royal Mail has scanned is marked shipped, with its email; a label Royal Mail is only expecting stays as it is.

  6. Step 6: What you set up

Royal Mail switched on as your carrier, your store receiving email, an address of yours that delivers to it written on every label, your Royal Mail account's confirmations forwarded there, and a 17TRACK key for the evening check. Royal Mail today, with more carriers and regions on the way.

What it does

  • Due today, by hand too

Tick Due today yourself and the customer gets the same email, with the delivery window from Royal Mail's last email for that parcel when there is one.

  • Every email once

Each parcel email goes once per order, checked against the send log, so an undo or a second tick never sends it twice.

  • Your words, not the courier's

On its way, due today, delivered and delivery request are templates in your admin. Edit them, preview them, or go back to the shipped wording.

  • Only Royal Mail's own link

The one link taken from Royal Mail's email is its own delivery options page for that number. Nothing else in the courier's email is passed on.

  • The customer's order page knows

Once the customer has been told the number, their order page shows it with a link to follow the parcel on Royal Mail's website.
